Encar — the Korean car marketplace
In this section we provide a detailed guide that will help you understand how the Encar website works. It will walk you through the key terms and features of the platform needed to find and buy the right car.
Encar is the largest online used-car marketplace in South Korea, an analogue of car classifieds like Auto.ru. The platform has existed since 1998 and over the decades has become the main reference point for both local buyers and international exporters. In 2017 the company was acquired by the Australian holding Carsales. The site lists tens of thousands of offers from private sellers, dealers and certified showrooms — primarily the Korean brands Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, as well as European, Japanese and American cars imported into the Korean domestic market.
1. Language and site navigation
The Encar website works exclusively in Korean — this is the main difficulty for a foreign buyer. Despite the absence of an official Russian or English interface, the built-in browser translator handles the task perfectly. We recommend using Google Chrome, Yandex.Browser or Microsoft Edge with automatic page translation. It is best to translate the interface into English: when translating into Russian, the system often produces distorted wording that makes comprehension harder.
After translation, the interface becomes intuitive. At the top of the home page are the main sections: car search, personal account, saved listings and notifications. In the centre of the page is a search bar with quick access to filters by make, model, year and price.
2. Searching for a vehicle
The main tool for working with the platform — the search filter — is located on the Encar home page. On the initial screen the site offers a choice of one of two main categories:
- Korean brands — Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, KG Mobility, Chevrolet Korea, Renault Korea.
- Imported brands — BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Toyota, Lexus, Volkswagen, Ford and others.
Filters and sorting
After selecting a category, an advanced search page opens with filters on the left side of the screen. Here you set the main parameters: make and model, year of manufacture, mileage range, price range, fuel type, body type, location region, transmission type, engine displacement. Additional filters allow you to select cars by the presence of specific options — a panoramic roof, adaptive cruise control, leather interior, a surround-view system, etc.
Search results can be sorted by listing date, price (ascending or descending), mileage and listing popularity.
3. Vehicle categories
Within the search, Encar divides all listings into several types that are important to understand when working with the platform.
By sale type
- General — a standard sale, the car is ready for re-registration. This is the most important category for those who plan to export the car abroad.
- Lease — the car is on a lease. Such cars cannot be exported outside Korea and are not subject to export.
- Rental — the car is a rental vehicle (former rental). It may have re-registration restrictions.
By listing type
- Dealer listing — a listing from a dealer or showroom.
- Private seller — a listing from a private individual.
- Certified pre-owned — a certified used car with an extended manufacturer warranty.
By condition
- Accident-free — a car with no accident history.
- One owner — a single owner for the entire time.
- Imported — the car was imported into Korea.
4. Types of sellers
There are three main categories of sellers on Encar, and understanding the differences between them significantly affects the choice of buying strategy.
- Private individuals — sell their own car directly. The price is usually lower than a dealer’s, but the deal requires independent legal verification, a personal inspection and processing of all documents. For a foreign buyer, dealing with a private seller carries increased risk.
- Dealers — independent car traders who buy cars from private individuals and resell them at a markup. Most listings on Encar belong to them. A dealer usually charges an additional sales commission of up to 450,000 won (~25,000 rubles), which is not always included in the stated price.
- Certified showrooms — large official licensed dealers. They provide extended warranties, a full set of documents and cars that have passed independent inspection. The cost is above the market average, but the level of transparency is maximal. A number of manufacturers (Hyundai, Kia) sell certified used cars precisely through such venues.
5. The car listing card
Clicking on any listing in the list takes you to the card of a specific car. This is the main source of information about the lot before deciding to buy.
At the top of the card are photos of the car — usually 10 to 20 images covering the exterior from all sides, the interior, the engine bay and the trunk.
Main card fields
- Price — stated in Korean won (KRW). Remember that the additional dealer commission is usually not included in this amount.
- Year of manufacture — the model year of the car.
- Mileage — in kilometres. Should be checked against the inspection history and the condition report.
- Fuel type — petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric, gas (LPG).
- Engine displacement — in cubic centimetres (cc).
- Body type — sedan, SUV, hatchback, minivan, pickup, etc.
- Transmission — automatic or manual.
- Colour — the main body colour.
- Region — the car’s location in Korea (important when arranging an inspection).
- Number of owners — the number of previous owners.
- Sale type — General, Lease or Rental (see the “Vehicle categories” section).
- Listing date — the date the lot was posted on the site.
- Keys availability — usually stated separately.
The “vehicle condition” block
The card has a vehicle-condition block with a button that opens the detailed Encar diagnosis report. The report has three tabs — Encar Diagnosis (body condition), Performance check and Insurance history. This data is key to assessing the real condition of the car; we cover it in the following sections.
6. The Encar diagnosis report: body condition
The first tab of the report is the body diagnosis. It clearly shows which parts of the car have been replaced or repaired and is one of the most important tools for assessing a lot.
At the top there is an overall verdict for two zones — for example, that the load-bearing frame is normal and the external panels are normal. Next to it is a link to the diagnosis criteria and compensation range. Below, the condition is detailed in two lists.
Load-bearing frame
The load-bearing body elements — their damage or replacement is the most critical, affects safety and greatly reduces value. The report checks:
- Front and inside panels
- Front and rear wheel housings
- A/B pillars, dash panel and floor
- Side sills and quarter panels
- Rear panel and trunk floor
- Side members, roof panel and package tray
External bolt-on panels
Bolt-on panels are easily removed and replaced, so work on them is less critical, but it still indicates that damage has been repaired:
- Hood
- Front fender
- Front door
- Rear door
- Trunk lid
How to read the part statuses
Each part is marked with a status: “normal” (highlighted in green) or a sign of work performed — part replacement or repair. Replacement or repair of load-bearing frame elements is a serious signal: such a car requires expert assessment and is a strong reason to lower the price. Replacement of an external bolt-on panel (hood, fender, door) is less critical and usually indicates the repair of minor damage.
At the bottom there is a diagnostic comment — a brief conclusion by the inspector (for example, that the car has no replaced external panels).
7. Performance check
The second tab is the official technical-condition inspection record, which in Korea is issued by a licensed inspector. Unlike the body diagnosis, it records the condition of the car’s units and systems.
The document contains the results of checks across dozens of parameters, grouped by unit.
General information and summary
- VIN, year of manufacture and date of first registration.
- Mileage at the time of inspection.
- A summary note on accidents, replacement and repair of load-bearing elements.
- Inspector details and the report date.
Engine
- Idle operation (noises, vibrations).
- Oil leaks.
- Cooling system condition, coolant leaks.
Transmission and drivetrain
- Gearbox operation (automatic / manual).
- Clutch condition (for manual transmissions).
- Torque transfer, drive shafts.
Steering, brakes, suspension
- Steering operation.
- Braking system condition.
- Suspension and shock absorber condition.
Electrics, fuel system and safety
- Operation of electrical components (lighting, power windows, climate).
- Fuel-system leaks.
- Presence and condition of airbags and seat belts.
Parameter grading
Parameters are marked as “normal” or “needs attention / faulty”. The presence of this record significantly reduces the risk of buying a car with hidden defects — especially relevant for foreign buyers who cannot inspect the car in person. Important: the data is entered by the seller, who is responsible for it, so an independent on-site inspection remains advisable.
8. Insurance claims history
The third tab contains the insurance claims history. The data comes from state insurance databases and lets you assess the car’s real accident history.
Access to the insurance history
The full insurance claims history on Encar is shown only to logged-in users, and registration requires a Korean phone number. So foreign buyers usually obtain this data through a Korean intermediary who has an active account.
There is no separate VIN search on Encar itself. If needed, an in-depth VIN check (mileage history from inspections, owner changes, liens and encumbrances) is ordered through third-party Korean services or through the same intermediary.
How to read the data
The insurance claims history usually includes several indicators. The key ones are:
- Number of insurance cases — how many times the car was in an accident for which compensation was paid.
- Payouts “as the at-fault party” — when this car caused the accident (damage to another party).
- Payouts “as the affected party” — payouts for damage to the car itself.
- Number of owner changes — how many times the owner changed.
Practical guidelines
A car with no insurance cases is the ideal option. Small payouts (the equivalent of a few hundred dollars) may correspond to minor damage such as scratches or parking dents. Large payouts, especially over 2-3 million won, usually indicate a serious accident. With several insurance cases involving substantial payouts, the car requires particularly thorough checking.
Important: the absence of insurance-accident records does not guarantee the car was never in an accident — repairs could have been done without an insurance claim.
9. What to look for when choosing a car
Since most buyers abroad have no opportunity to inspect the car in person before purchasing it, working correctly with the information on the site becomes critically important.
Practical advice
Examine all photos carefully, paying special attention to the gaps between body panels — their unevenness often indicates previous bodywork. Open the Encar diagnosis report and check the statuses of the load-bearing frame and the external panels, as well as the diagnostic comment.
Replacement of load-bearing elements — longitudinal members, pillars, the floor — is a serious reason to refuse the purchase or to significantly reduce the price. Replacement or painting of external bolt-on panels (hood, fenders, doors) without intervention in the load-bearing frame is an acceptable history for a used car.
Compare the mileage in the listing with the performance check data and the inspection history: a discrepancy of more than 5-10% should raise concern and may indicate odometer rollback.
Check whether the car is a lease or rental (the Lease and Rental categories) — such cars are not exported outside Korea. Make sure the seller’s details match the owner; transfer money only to an account registered in the name of the actual owner — never to third parties.
10. Buying specifics for foreigners
Encar is primarily a domestic Korean market, so foreign buyers need to take a number of specifics into account.
A direct purchase on Encar requires a Korean phone number, a bank account and, as a rule, an alien identification number (a registration number for residents). Without this data, independent registration and completing a deal are difficult.
Most international buyers work through Korean intermediaries — export agents or brokers who have active accounts on the platform, can inspect the car in person, negotiate the price and handle all the necessary documentation.
VAT (10%) is in most cases already included in the price of the car. However, some dealers, when issuing an official tax invoice (required for customs), demand an additional 10% payment. This is an illegal demand — VAT must be included in the price from the outset.
11. Export restrictions
Not all cars from Encar can be exported abroad. This is a fundamentally important point for buyers from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and other countries.
Cars not subject to export
- Lease cars (Lease) — owned by the leasing company and cannot be re-registered to a foreign buyer.
- Rental cars of some categories (Rental) — similar restrictions.
- Cars with an outstanding loan or lien.
- Vehicles with unpaid fines or tax debts.
Checking before purchase
Before buying, you must make sure the sale type is listed as General, and additionally check the absence of encumbrances with a Korean broker.
12. Saved searches and notifications
Registered Encar users have access to a number of convenient tools that make working with a large volume of listings easier.
- Favourite listings — the ability to add a car you like to a watch list. The system will notify you of a price change or the removal of the listing.
- Saved searches — a function to save a search filter with the parameters you set. Encar automatically shows new listings matching the saved search, eliminating the need to repeat the search manually every day. Indispensable when looking for rare trims or specific models.
- Price-drop notifications — when the price of a watched listing drops, the user receives a corresponding notification. An effective tool for those who are not in a hurry to buy and are waiting for the right moment.
- Email digests — customisable digests with new listings for the parameters you set. Convenient when searching for several models of different makes at once.
13. Competing platforms
Encar holds a leading position in the market, but it is not the only Korean platform for buying used cars. Knowing the alternatives helps form a complete picture of the market.
- K Car — the second-largest platform, specialising in certified used cars. It operates on an “asset-heavy” model: it buys cars from owners, conducts its own inspection and resells them with a warranty. Prices are somewhat higher than on Encar, but the level of transparency and buyer protection is maximal.
- KB Cha Cha Cha — a platform from the largest Korean bank, KB, with a focus on financial instruments and lending. Widely used by dealers.
- Lotte Auto Auction — a closed auction operating mainly for the domestic Korean market. Access for foreign buyers is limited, but with a Korean partner broker, participation in the bidding is possible.
- Autowini — a wholesale platform oriented towards export. Cars here are cheaper, but the overall condition of the lots is significantly worse than on Encar and K Car. It requires particular caution and a mandatory independent inspection.
14. Additional purchase costs
The price stated in an Encar listing is only a starting point. For a foreign buyer, a number of mandatory costs are added to it.
Costs within Korea
- Dealer commission — up to 450,000 won (~25,000 rubles), not always included in the price.
- Deregistration of the car for export.
- Services of an export broker or agent.
- Transport to the port of departure (usually Busan or Incheon).
- Independent expert assessment and inspection (if necessary).
Delivery costs
- International sea transport: RoRo (the car drives onto the vessel under its own power, cheaper) or container transport (more expensive, but provides protection during transport).
- Cargo insurance for the duration of transport.
Costs upon import into the destination country
- Customs duty.
- VAT (value added tax).
- Excise (if applicable).
- Customs broker services.
Bottom line
The total additional costs when importing into Russia or Belarus are usually from 30 to 50% of the car’s price on Encar. Nevertheless, even taking all costs into account, a Korean car often turns out to be 20-30% cheaper than a comparable option on the domestic market.
15. Why use an intermediary?
Encar is a Korean-language platform oriented towards the domestic market. Buying on your own without knowing the Korean language, understanding local legislation and having connections with logistics partners involves significant risks. A professional intermediary solves all these issues comprehensively.
What the intermediary handles
- Selecting cars per the client’s request and analysing offers on Encar, K Car and other platforms.
- Reviewing the Encar diagnosis report and insurance history, arranging an independent technical inspection on site in Korea — this is the only reliable way to verify the real condition of the car.
- Negotiating with the seller and legal verification of documents.
- Deregistering the car and processing export documents.
- Arranging delivery to the port and international transport.
- Assistance with customs clearance on the buyer’s side.
