Chery Jaecoo J5 EV loses wheel in Jakarta, raising questions after Omoda 5 axle failures

A Jaecoo J5 EV lost its right-front wheel in Central Jakarta on November 4 after striking a roadside curb and barrier, according to the manufacturer’s technical inspection. The incident comes amid renewed scrutiny of Chery Group following separate Omoda 5 rear axle failures and a recall campaign in Malaysia covering 8,878 vehicles.

Footage of the damaged electric SUV circulated on Indonesian social media, drawing comparisons with the Malaysian cases.

Jaecoo J5 EV wheel detaches in Central Jakarta

The incident occurred at approximately 08:20 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) on November 4, along Jalan KH Mas Mansyur in Karet Tengsin, Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta.

Footage shared by motorists showed a black Jaecoo J5 EV immobilised beside a raised concrete median, with its right-front wheel assembly separated from the vehicle. Suspension components and a detached bumper section were visible on the roadway, while part of the roadside barrier was also damaged.

Some initial Indonesian reports identified the detached wheel as the right-rear wheel. Jaecoo subsequently clarified that the affected assembly was at the front-right corner.

Jaecoo attributes damage to curb and barrier impact

Jaecoo Indonesia said its technical team inspected the vehicle after communicating with its owner. The company concluded that the SUV struck a curb and roadside barrier before the wheel detached, describing the separation as a consequence of the collision rather than its cause.

The inspection identified damage to the front-right bumper, fender and front passenger door. Jaecoo said it found no indication that a product defect caused the incident. Its aftersales team was coordinating repairs and replacement parts with the owner.

No independent investigation into the Jakarta incident has been reported.

Jakarta incident draws comparisons with Malaysia’s Omoda 5 axle failures

Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ) temporarily suspended the Omoda 5’s Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) on October 11, 2026, postponing new registrations while it investigated the issue. Chery announced a recall campaign for affected Omoda 5 C and H variants, confirming on October 14 that it covered 8,878 vehicles, with inspections and replacement of affected components. The campaign followed an Omoda 5 rear axle detachment incident in Malaysia.

The issue also prompted a public apology from Chery Chairman Yin Tongyue. On October 21, he apologised to Malaysia’s investment, trade and industry minister over vehicle quality concerns, as reported in our coverage of his remarks.

The Omoda 5 had faced an earlier axle-related campaign in May 2024, when 600 vehicles were called in for precautionary inspection. Chery subsequently identified 60 vehicles fitted with affected axle components from a batch produced on August 15, 2023, and attributed the problem to a miscalibrated welding tip.

The Malaysian cases involved the Omoda 5’s rear axle, whereas Jaecoo attributes the Jakarta J5 EV’s right-front wheel separation to an impact with roadside infrastructure. The two incidents have not been linked.

Jaecoo J5 EV sales in Indonesia

Gaikindo data show that the Jaecoo J5 EV recorded 26,635 wholesale deliveries in Indonesia between January and September 2026, making it the country’s best-selling battery-electric passenger model, according to Antara.
