2027 Range Rover Electric First Look: It Barely Looks Electric
Yes, this is the new, first ever battery-powered Range Rover. No, we didn’t use the wrong photos. Range Rover’s goal is that its first ever electric model is a Range Rover first and an EV second, with the idea being that it does everything an internal-combustion Range Rover can do, just without the gas engine.
We don’t have a lot to say about the 2027 Range Rover Electric’s styling-because, well, look at it. From the outside, it looks like a Range Rover. From the inside, it looks like a Range Rover. But for the aerodynamic wheels and sealed grille, which mimics the pattern of the functional one on ICE-powered Rangies, there’s little to distinguish its lack of an engine.
In place of that engine is a pair of electric motors that supplies all four wheels with a very Range Rover-like 542 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. The company claims a 0–60 time of 4.3 seconds, a bit quicker than the gas-powered Range Rovers we’ve tested.
Those motors feed off a Range Rover-designed 118.5-kWh battery, anticipated to deliver 333 miles of EPA-rated range, according to the automaker. Its 800-volt electrical system reportedly charges at speeds of up to 350 kW, and is capable of adding 125 miles of range in 10 minutes and charging from 10 to 80 percent in 22 minutes. The Range Rover uses a NACS charging port to allow for easy access to the Tesla Supercharger network.
Range Rover’s legendary off-road ability remains intact. The Electric model can, according to the company, climb a 45-degree slope and ford water 35 inches high. (We’ve spent quite a bit of time off-roading in EVs, and their precise power delivery and one-pedal driving capability make them great for tiptoeing through Mother Nature.)
Like the proverbial duck sitting calmly on the water, under the surface is a lot of frantic paddling. Parent company Jaguar Land Rover has applied for 300 patents, more than any other Range Rover model, including a temperature management system for both the cabin and propulsion system called ThermAssist. Range Rover says it adds up to 25 miles of range while reducing heating energy use by 40 percent. JLR builds the motors in-house, and claims they develop 20 percent more torque than competing e-motors of the same size.
Range Rover calls its battery management system “Battery Digital Twin.” It records some 900 data points about the battery’s health and performance; combined with Range Rover’s over-the-air updates, it effectively allows for proactive maintenance of the powertrain.
Check out Range Rover’s configure-and-price site, and you’ll see that electricity is treated like just another powertrain. The “EV550” electric drivetrain will be offered in short- and long-wheelbase models (though there is no seven-seat version) and in SE, Autobiography, SV, SV Black, and SV Ultra trims. Pricing starts at $140,450 for the standard-wheelbase SE (that price includes a steep $2,450 destination fee) and $183,200 for the long-wheelbase Autobiography. There will also be a $179,150 electric-only First Edition, with all Autobiography features plus specific colors, First Edition badging, and a few desirable extras.
