General Motors taps PHEV sedan segment with Buick Electra GS
General Motors is ready to launch the Buick Electra GS plug-in hybrid sedan in China. Built jointly with SAIC, it will compete with some high-volume models from BYD and Geely. The Electra GS is on time, as Buick’s deliveries declined by 20.4% Year-Over-Year in China, according to China EV DataTracker.
The Buick Electra GS was exposed in China by the local Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) during the domestic homologation process. It is a large sedan with dimensions of 4979/1914/1495 mm and a wheelbase of 2,865 mm. For clarity, it is 149 mm longer than the BYD Qin L DM-i sedan, marketed in some overseas markets under the Seal 6 name.
The car’s exterior styling adopts a closed front end with a sizeable trapeze-shaped air intake, U-shaped headlights, semi-hidden door handles, a sleek roofline, a single taillight unit, and a ducktail spoiler. This sedan has approach and departure angles of 13 and 14 degrees, respectively. It rides on 18- or 19-inch wheels (225/50 R18 or 234/45 R19). The Electra GS can be optionally equipped with a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor. The curb weight lies between 1,780 and 1,890 kg. Its gross weight reaches 2,300 kg.
The entry-level Buick Electra GS sedan comes standard with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated 15FMC petrol-powered engine with a peak power output of 72 kW (97 hp). This ICE is manufactured by SAIC. The same ICE is used by the Roewe Jiayue 07 crossover, the Saic H5 (Shangjie H5), the Buick Electra E7 SUV, and other models. This engine is paired with a 165 kW (221 hp) electric motor. The car’s top speed is 190 km/h. It adopts two LFP battery pack variants from Zenergy and Rept Battero.
A more powerful variant of the Buick Electra GS has a 1.5-liter turbocharged LD3 engine with a peak power output of 115 kW (154 hp). The same engine is used by the Buick Electra L7 sedan, the Buick GL8 PHEV minivan, and other cars. This ICE also works in pairs with a 165 kW (221 hp) electric motor. The top-trim Electra GS has a top speed of 190 km/h and a Zenergy-made LFP battery.
It seems that the entry-level Buick Electra GS sedan will rival the mentioned BYD Qin L DM-i sedan. The latter model offers a combination of a 1.5-liter engine for 74 kW (99 hp) and an electric motor with a peak power output of 160 kW (215 hp). BYD delivered 70,740 units of this sedan to customers in China from January to September 2026, according to China EV DataTracker. The Electra GS is expected to cost more than 100,000 yuan (14,970 USD) domestically.
