Volkswagen began production of the EA211 range extender for the ID. Era 9X SUV
Volkswagen and SAIC began mass production of the EA211 1.5-liter range extender variant for the ID. Era 9X full-size SUV. This ICE was adopted for an EREV powertrain with improved power generation efficiency. The massive ID. Era 9X crossover with this engine will start presales this month.
The EA211 is a family of inline petrol-powered engines launched by Volkswagen in 2011. In 2017, Volkswagen released the updated variant of the EA211 engine for plug-in hybrids. In early March 2026, the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture commenced volume production of the EA211 modification for extended range electric vehicles.
The new ICE is called EA211-ERV. VW officials prefer to call it “Golden Range Extender.” It is a 1.5-liter engine with a variable geometry turbocharger. It adopts a Miller cycle and a 350-bar fuel injection system. Other features of the ERV are a water-cooled intercooler and an exhaust purification device. The new engine has a peak power output of 105 kW (141 hp). It doesn’t transfer torque to the wheels. Instead, it sends power to a battery and electric motors.
Engines in EREV powertrains work under specific conditions. It usually operates with constant RPM with no need to immediately respond to an acceleration pedal. In certain scenarios, it can lead to carbon buildup. It seems Volkswagen is confident in the EREV variant of the EA211 engine. The company shared that the ID. Era 9X had completed the cold-weather tests in Heihe.
