2027 Volkswagen SUV Lineup: Redesigning the Atlas, Dropping the ID4

Once the biggest automaker in the world, Volkswagen Group is in the midst of downsizing its global offerings. It plans to focus on only the most desirable segments as it faces slumping sales across its various brands. We have yet to see the impact of these cuts in the United States, but the German automaker already decided to slim down its offerings in our market when the discontinuation of the all-electric Volkswagen ID4 was announced earlier this year.

It’s not all bad news. We’ve been pleased with the recently refreshed Volkswagen Taos subcompact SUV, and the third-generation Tiguan is a vast improvement over its predecessor. On the car side of Volkswagen’s portfolio, the updated Jetta shows improvement, the ID Buzz is back, and the GTI and Golf R have won our 2026 Car of the Year.

Now, we turn our attention to the 2027 Volkswagen SUV lineup. Although it’s now home to just three nameplates, change is afoot. We’ve chronicled every update below.

2027 Volkswagen Taos

After a major refresh for the 2025 model year, the 2027 Volkswagen Taos arrives with minor updates. VW introduces a Sport trim to the lineup, splitting the difference between the base Taos S and the value-focused SE grade. You’ll be able to spot the 2027 Taos Sport by its black 18-inch wheels, roof rails, spoiler, mirror caps, and 4Motion badge. The bumper trim, rear skidplate, and exhaust tips are finished in gunmetal.

Sport models get special touches inside the cabin, as well. Volkswagen dresses up the interior with yellow stitching and embossed black cloth seats. Added privacy glass makes the Taos Sport a shade more premium than the S.

VW doesn’t ignore the base Taos, however. The entry-level model now comes standard with satellite radio, voice commands, and a six-speaker sound system. Volkswagen also equips its Premium Speech with AI conversational assistant feature. 2027 Taos S SUVs also come standard with keyless entry and an upgraded seat belt reminder.

2027 Volkswagen Tiguan

Like the Taos, the 2027 Volkswagen Tiguan is still fresh from a redesign for 2025. Changes are minimal for the new model year. Top-level SEL R-Line Turbo models receive a new rearview camera, and the SEL R-Line Black trim gets a heated steering wheel. All 2027 Volkswagen Tiguan SUVs are equipped with auto hold for increased comfort in traffic and on hills.

2027 Volkswagen Atlas

The big news for the 2027 Volkswagen SUV lineup is the introduction of a redesigned Atlas, the automaker’s entry in the three-row SUV segment. In addition to fresh exterior styling with new lighting, including a grille adorned with double light bars, the second-generation Atlas rides on VW’s updated MQB Evo platform. Naturally, new wheel designs accompany the Atlas’ reworked design.

Under the hood, the Atlas is powered by the fifth-generation EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which develops 282 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque in this application. As before, FWD is standard, and VW’s 4Motion AWD system is available. All 2027 Volkswagen Atlas SUVs work with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Moving to the new SUV’s interior, Volkswagen decks out the cabin with an overhauled layout and new materials. Ten-color ambient lighting is standard, and higher trims get a 30-color setup. A 12.9-infotainment touchscreen is standard on lower trims, while a 15.0-inch display is offered on higher-level versions of the Atlas.

Although the central touchscreen varies from model to model, all 2027 Volkswagen Atlas SUVs get a 10.3-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster. In keeping with the interior of the Tiguan, the Atlas is equipped with a dial to control volume, drive modes, and “atmospheres,” VW’s mood lighting and sound feature.

As for the Atlas Cross Sport, Volkswagen says the coupe version of largest SUV is slated to make its debut in the second half of 2026.

Volkswagen ID4: Discontinued

After a six model-year run, the Volkswagen ID4 has been discontinued without a replacement. First introduced for 2021, the compact ID4 was the only electric vehicle in the Volkswagen SUV lineup.

Now the Volkswagen ID Buzz is the only EV the automaker is offering for 2027. The ID4 was comfortable and spacious, but its slow charging and fussy control scheme held it back. It’s unclear what VW’s electric vehicle strategy will be for the United States going forward, but for now that road map does not include the ID4.
