Geely & Renault’s Horse Powertrain unveils 13-in-1 PHEV off-road drive system with 4920 Nm wheel torque
Horse Powertrain, a joint venture between Geely and Renault, has unveiled the 3DHT200, a 13-in-1 PHEV electric drive system with a 3-speed dedicated-hybrid transmission. The drive system will debut on the upcoming 830 kW (1,113 hp) Galaxy Cruiser 700, Geely’s first “boxy” SUV.
It is the third entry in Horse’s 3DHT lineup, and is the first model to focus on off-road performance, featuring up to 4920 Nm of wheel output torque. Horse claims the system will allow vehicles to climb 45-degree slopes.
Specifications
The 3DHT200 features a 110 kW (148 hp) P1 motor, which starts the engine and generates electricity. It also features a 230 kW (308 hp) P3 motor, which takes up traction duties and mainly drives the vehicle’s wheels.
Like other PHEV drivetrains, Horse says the 3DHT200 supports pure EV, series and parallel hybrid modes. The system aims for series operation, akin to a range extender, in low-speed urban driving, then switches to parallel direct-drive mode at higher speeds.
The 13-in-1 moniker refers to consolidated components, including the P1 and P3 motors, the P1 and P3 controllers, on-board charger, DC-DC converter, PDU, TCU, PVC, THM, TMS, 3DHT gearbox, and motor gearbox. Horse claims a 10% reduction in unit volume.
Horse also says it has optimised its electric motor design, moving from a “2V / VV” to a “3V / VVV” permanent magnet layout. This increases torque density by 15% and power density by 20%, allowing for more performance from a similarly sized unit.
The P3 drive motor can exceed 20,000 rpm, enabling sustained operation at higher driving speeds. Horse also says the system will enable vehicles to hit 0-100 km/h in the 3-second range, while allowing large SUVs like the Galaxy Cruiser 700 to achieve consumption figures of 5 L/100km.
Off-road focus
The 3-speed transmission is hooked up to the combustion engine, while the P3 drive motor powers the wheels via a single-speed gear reduction. Horse says the drive system delivers high efficiency across a wide range of environments, including high-load, low-speed off-road driving.
Maximum wheel output torque is rated at 4920 Nm, and Horse says the system lets off-road vehicles climb slopes up to 45 degrees. The 3DHT system is paired with a rear motor on the Galaxy Cruiser 700, forming an e-4WD configuration.
More powertrain details, including fuel consumption and vehicle-specific motor power, are expected to emerge in the run-up to the Galaxy Cruiser 700’s launch.
