GWM’s 2026 Haval H9 launches: 800 mm wading SUV keeps diesel alive, from 26,930 USD in China

The 2026 Haval H9 has officially entered the Chinese market with pricing starting at 199,900 yuan (26,930 USD) and topping out at 247,900 yuan (33,400 USD), as Great Wall Motor continues to reposition its body-on-frame SUV lineup amid shifting demand toward hybrid and off-road segments.

The model retains its ladder-frame architecture but introduces updated styling, interior tech upgrades, and continued reliance on internal combustion engines rather than electrification.

Black exterior package expands positioning

The 2026 update introduces a blacked-out design package covering the grille, lighting surrounds, bumpers, mirrors, and roof rails. The SUV retains its traditional proportions with a rear-mounted spare wheel and boxy silhouette.

Dimensions remain unchanged at 5,070 mm length with up to 1,976 mm width and 2,850 mm wheelbase. Off-road geometry remains unchanged, with 800 mm of wading depth and an approach angle of 32 degrees.

Interior upgrade centres on infotainment system

Inside, the H9 receives a 15.6-inch 2.5K display running Coffee OS 3. The system supports multi-zone voice interaction, smartphone integration, and AI-based assistant functions branded as Coffee GPT.

A new interior colour option, “lava red,” joins ambient lighting updates. Equipment includes a 540-degree camera system, an electric tailgate, and L2 driver assistance functions with parking support.

Powertrain continues ICE strategy

The SUV continues to offer two combustion powertrains:

  • 2.0T petrol engine: 165 kW

  • 2.4T diesel engine: 137 kW

Transmission options include an 8-speed automatic for petrol and a 9-speed unit for diesel variants. The drivetrain remains a TOD-based AWD system with mechanical locking differentials front and rear.

This positions the H9 alongside other recent GWM ladder-frame products, including the Haval H9 Crossing Edition and upcoming flagship SUVs such as the Haval H10 and Menglong Plus, both of which expand the brand’s off-road portfolio.

Market context shows pressure on Haval sales

Haval’s domestic performance continues to fluctuate. In March 2026, sales reached 24,520 units, down 19.7% year-on-year, following a weaker February at 12,391 units.

Lineage reinforced by broader Haval SUV expansion

The 2026 H9 sits within a rapidly evolving Haval SUV family. Recent developments include:

  • Haval H9 Crossing Edition with dual-fuel tank layout

  • Haval Menglong Plus hybrid SUV entering presales with extended EV range

  • Newly defined flagship Haval H10 positioned above H9 in size and capability

These models indicate a clearer internal hierarchy as GWM separates mainstream, off-road, and premium SUV tiers.
