2027 Volkswagen Atlas Interior Review: A More Premium Cabin With a Few Familiar Flaws

2027 Volkswagen Atlas Interior Review: A More Premium Cabin With a Few Familiar Flaws

Volkswagen says the redesigned 2027 Atlas cabin is more premium, more family-friendly, and easier to use. The new interior certainly looks the part, with richer materials and a more modern layout, while added amenities promise to make life on board easier. But with more controls shifting to screens, does the new Atlas get the balance right?

Cockpit Views

The outgoing Atlas had a somewhat conventional-looking dashboard. The redesigned interior feels more modern and upright. A band stretching across the front of the cabin is bordered by real wood, and at night, ambient lighting can make that trim appear to float. The lower three trims get light-colored wood, while the range-topping SEL Premium R-Line uses a dark coffee finish. Both are nice, but we wish Volkswagen used more of it throughout the passenger areas.

The ambient lighting layout is especially dramatic. The top two trims offer 30 colors; other models get 10. With the system on, illuminated dot-matrix-style patterns span the passenger side of the dashboard and the front and rear doors, while light strips brighten the center console’s cupholders.

What Tech Is Inside the Atlas?

In keeping with the trend toward fewer physical controls, the Atlas leans on its screens and menus. The 10.3-inch driver display carries over, now with configurable Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro. The available 15.0-inch touchscreen is bright and easy to read, though its touch controls along the bottom can be on the overly sensitive side. The base model gets a new 12.9-inch screen; both options are larger than last year’s 12.0-inch display.

The shift lever moves from the center console to the steering column, freeing up space below. A new Driver Experience dial can adjust the stereo volume, select a drive mode, or choose one of the Atlas’s Atmospheres that coordinates interior ambient lighting and audio settings, including Nature, Minimal, and Lounge, or a custom “mood.”

Every Atlas includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus two magnetic wireless charging pads in the redesigned console. A head-up display comes on the two highest trims.

Is the VW Atlas Nice Inside?

Comfort takes a step up for 2027, especially up front. The revised 12-way driver’s seat adds enhanced four-way lumbar support, while both front seats are heated and ventilated, with newly available full-back massage functions and lumbar support. Available driver’s seat thigh support adds another way to tailor the fit. For second-row passengers, ventilation is now available for the seats and new B-pillar vents improve airflow.

Materials and details reinforce the more premium feel. Varenna leather or leatherette covers the seats on lower trims, while the top model gets Nappa leather. The redesigned door panels team revised armrests with integrated release handles, moved down from their previous position higher on the doors. That cleaner, more unified layout gives the cabin a more considered look.

This year’s color palette includes two standout options: Airy Mistral Gray and the all-new Garnet Red. Moody Soul Black with a Pure Grey motif is also available as a more subdued alternative.

How Much Space Is in the VW Atlas?

The Atlas seats up to seven, with good room in the first two rows and a third row best suited to kids. First- and second-row legroom carry over at 41.7 and 37.6 inches, while third-row legroom grows from 33.7 to 34.1 inches, giving older kids a little more room. Headroom is unchanged at 41.3 inches up front, 40.4 inches in the second row, and 38.3 inches in the third. The second row comes standard as a 60/40-split bench, with optional captain’s chairs on the top three trims.

Cargo capacity measures 21.2 cubic feet behind the third row and 55.9 cubic feet with it folded, both slight improvements over the previous Atlas. Fold the second row, too, and maximum space is 94.5 cubic feet-2.1 cubic feet less than before. The second-row seat slides, reclines, and folds flat; its child-seat-friendly flip-and-slide design helps passengers reach the 50/50-split third row. A power liftgate is now standard, and every model has front seat-back pockets.

VW Atlas Standard Features

Several new standard features make the Atlas better suited to family duty. Rear sunshades help keep afternoon sun off passengers, while dual lights in the hatch brighten the cargo area when loading or unloading after dark. Every model also gets an auto-dimming driver-side mirror, proximity locking and unlocking, and remote engine start.

USB ports in all three rows help keep devices charged, and a 12-volt outlet in the cargo area adds another power source. The top three trims add a 115-volt outlet for second-row passengers. An auto-dimming rearview mirror is standard across the lineup, with HomeLink included on the top three trims.

The top two trims bring navigation and a leather-wrapped R-Line steering wheel with shift paddles. They also get powered front seats for both driver and passenger; lower trims have a power-adjustable driver’s seat only. Brushed stainless steel pedals add a sportier touch. The range-topping trim upgrades the standard nine-speaker audio system to a 14-speaker Harman Kardon system with a subwoofer.

A Better Grocery Getter?

The Atlas’s cabin finally looks as family-ready as it feels: more upscale, more comfortable, and thoughtfully equipped for life with kids. Third-row space remains kid-sized, and the touch controls can test your patience, but a roomier-feeling second row, clever storage, and useful new conveniences make this a more polished place to spend time.
