Kia K4 Hatchback COTY Review: Design Writes a Check Its Driving Dynamics Can’t Cash

Kia K4 Hatchback COTY Review: Design Writes a Check Its Driving Dynamics Can’t Cash

Pros

  • Fantastic design
  • Comfortable seats throughout
  • Great value

Cons

  • Bumpy ride
  • Prone to understeer
  • Dynamically unmemorable

When was the last time we got a truly new hatchback? Go on, we’ll wait. It’s been a hot minute, hasn’t it? That’s what makes the 2026 Kia K4 Hatchback significant: It takes the well-equipped K4 sedan and gives it even more practicality. And it looks great while doing the job, too. But is this hatch also hot?

Take a second to admire its hotness from a styling standpoint. Thanks to its low-slung, tidy lines and cool C-pillar-mounted rear door handles, the K4 Hatchback’s proportions very nearly broach into wagon territory. “This is one sharp-looking economy car,” associate editor Billy Rehbock said. “It looks good from pretty much every angle, and the squared-off rear improves the look of the ugly sedan.”

We especially like it in Kia’s Sparkling Yellow gold color, which contrasts exceedingly well with the black wheels.

Inside, more goodness awaits, especially in our test car’s top GT-Line Turbo grade. The front seats are comfortable and well-bolstered, and the rear seats are roomy and enjoyable to sit in. Everything is outfitted in an attractive black and white motif and accented with brushed metal look accents. The dual-screen setup is clear and easy to read.

But the best improvement addresses a fundamental bone we’ve had to pick with Kias as of late: The climate and media controls no longer share a dual function command bar. It used to be that if you wanted to adjust the fans or the music, you’d have to toggle the command bar to be able to do one or the other. Now, the media controls are largely relegated to the screen, and the climate controls get their own dedicated set of buttons. It’s a much better and far more intuitive setup.

As a last bit of ergonomic cleverness, the drive mode button is located right on the steering wheel. Where it should always be, honestly.

But when driven spiritedly, the K4 Hatchback started to lose its Sparkling Yellow sheen. We found the turbo lag significant, power sluggish, steering response slow, and brakes mushy. Across the rough road course at the proving ground, the car tended to pogo and felt like it needed more rebound damping to settle things down.

“On the handling course, the expected front-wheel-drive understeer arrives early, there is plenty of body roll, and significant bumps can noticeably disturb the chassis,” said guest judge and former Cadillac, Infiniti, and Audi executive Johan de Nysschen. “It’s a competent car, but dynamically there is little here that is memorable.” Hot hatch, the K4 is not.

Although it was a letdown when we put the foot down, we think the K4 Hatchback would excel as a commuter car, owing largely to its big trunk and nice seating. On highways, Kia’s Highway Driving Assist 2 advanced adaptive cruise control continues to impress. And with its as-tested price of $33,020, it’s a screaming deal in our opinion. The K4 presents as far more upmarket than it is.

But beautiful design and good value are arguably the most the K4 hatch has going for it, and that only covers two of our six Of The Year criteria. Besides the hatchback, the K4 also doesn’t see any significant engineering advancements this time around, and as we’ve outlined, it isn’t particularly joyous to drive. Still, just because it didn’t make it as a Car of the Year finalist, we believe anyone who gets into one will appreciate it for all positives we’ve laid out.

This review was conducted as part of our 2027 Car of the Year (COTY) testing, where each vehicle is evaluated on our six key criteria: efficiency, design, safety, engineering excellence, value, and performance of intended function. Eligible vehicles must be all-new or significantly revised.
